Job Opening – Part Time Academic Mentor

The mission of Oakland Kids First (OKF) is to create leadership opportunities for young people to transform their schools so that all youth graduate with the skills and motivation to succeed. Over the past fifteen years, OKF has developed a unique model for school improvement that demonstrates the importance of youth leadership and engagement as a strategy to improve school culture and achieve equitable outcomes for underserved students.

OKF is seeking an Academic Mentor that will  academic and enrichment services in collaboration with fellow Academic Mentors and school day staff.

The ideal candidate would:

  • Be a committed youth worker who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves in a non-traditional setting and facilitate real-world skill building
  • Be a motivated and responsible leader who is dedicated to upholding a strong school culture
  • Have an ability to work with urban youth and collaborate with other adult allies within a social justice framework

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tutor and coach students to complete homework and research assignments in various academic subjects, including mathematics, English, science, and electives.
  • Plan, prepare, and execute activities aimed towards academic skill building, college and career readiness, and social-emotional learning.
  • Foster productive relationships with students to encourage continuous attendance
  • Collect student attendance, satisfaction, and impact assessment data.
  • Participate in program planning and evaluation meetings.
  • Establish and sustain collaborative working relationship with teachers, school staff, parents and students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of paid professional experience in academic advising, mentoring, and tutoring high school youth.
  • Demonstrates ability to ​effectively tutor and coach high school students in various academic subjects.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively prepare curriculum and deliver instruction.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively facilitate enrichment activities geared towards community building and social-emotional learning.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively work in collaborative teams.
  • Negative Result on tuberculosis test.
  • LiveScan background check clearance.
  • 48 College semester units or passage of the OUSD Instructional Aide examination.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs and engage in physical activities such as active ice breakers/team-builders
  • Bilingual in Spanish and Mam is a plus.

Hours and Compensation: Part Time 6 hours per week. Additional hours can be available based on student demand.

Start Date: August 2019

Offer of employment is contingent on passing a criminal background screen and TB test.

The position is part time, 6 hours per week, with some additional hours during major events. Academic Mentor will report directly to the Community Programs Manager. Salary is commensurate with experience. Employer provides vacation, health, and dental benefits.
